If standing near an ikebana arrangement, gesture to the open spaces rather than the flowers — this illustrates the point physically. Move hands slowly and deliberately to match the meditative spirit of the art form.
生け花 (ikebana — living flowers) differs fundamentally from Western bouquet arrangements. Where Western floristry fills space with abundance, ikebana uses negative space (余白, yokuhaku) as an active design element. The three main elements — heaven (天), earth (地), and human (人) — represent a philosophical balance of the universe.
