Gesture & etiquette
Stand at the neighbor's door holding the small gift in both hands at chest height. Deep bow (about 30°) before speaking. Present the gift with both hands, wrapping/label facing them. Keep visit very brief.
Visit immediate neighbors (両隣・向こう三軒) within 1-2 weeks of moving in. Bring a modest gift (500-1000 yen towels, sweets, or detergent). Bow deeply and present with both hands, saying 'つまらないものですが' (it's a small thing but...). Keep the visit brief (2-3 minutes). Never visit before 10am or after 6pm. Urban apartments increasingly skip this, but family homes always observe it.
