Gesture & etiquette
Bow about 30 degrees with hands at your sides or holding a small gift (fruits, flowers—but not white chrysanthemums or potted plants, which evoke funerals or 'rooted illness'). Smile warmly but not too boisterously; the person may still be tired.
Discharge from hospital is a delicate congratulation—the person is recovering, not fully well. 「誠に」 (truly) adds warmth, while 「お体お大切に」 (please cherish your health) is the standard well-wishing close. Avoid asking about specifics of the illness unless they offer; instead focus on the joy of returning home.
