Bow about 15-20 degrees. If meeting the baby, lower voice, do not approach within arm's length without permission. Never touch baby's face or hands (germ awareness). Hand gift to parent with both hands, never directly to baby.
Standard birth congratulation. 「母子ともに」 (both mother and child) is the conventional phrasing for asking about safety. Always check with parents before visiting newborns—first 1-2 weeks are exhausting. Gift suggestions: 御祝儀 cash gift (5,000-10,000 yen for colleagues), practical items (diapers, baby clothes 80cm size, not too small).
