Gesture & etiquette

Hold your glass at chest height; clink lightly with those nearest to you, positioning your glass just slightly lower than a superior's; make brief, warm eye contact with each person you clink with; take your first sip after the clink and a small bow.

Never drink before 乾杯 is called — even a sip beforehand is considered rude. Always hold your glass lower than a senior's when clinking to show respect. Do not pour your own drink; pour for others and they will pour for you. If you don't drink alcohol, you may substitute with a non-alcoholic drink — participation in the toast matters more than the drink.
