Gesture & etiquette
Ask this in a natural, casual tone — not clinical; note the response in your phone or notepad if hosting a group; follow up with 'ほかに何かございましたら、遠慮なく。' (please feel free to mention anything else) to keep the door open.
Ask about preferences before cooking or ordering — not at the table after the food arrives. Many Japanese guests will not raise food dislikes voluntarily even if asked only about allergies, fearing they seem demanding. Asking 'お嫌いなもの' (what you dislike) is more culturally complete than asking only 'アレルギーはありますか?'
