Gesture & etiquette
Point clearly and politely to the specific plate; nod and say 'ありがとうございます' after the explanation; take a plate from the belt only when it's directly in front of you — don't reach across other diners or back down the belt.
At kaiten sushi (回転寿司, conveyor belt sushi), it's perfectly fine to ask staff or touch-screen systems about specific items rather than picking blindly from the belt. Color-coded plates indicate price — keep all plates on your table for billing at the end. Most modern kaiten sushi restaurants have touchscreen menus in multiple languages.
