Gesture & etiquette

Press your palms together (合掌) briefly, similar to a prayer gesture, while saying this. In group settings, it is often said in unison as the eldest or host begins. Never start eating before this phrase in Japanese company.

「いただきます」comes from the verb 「いただく」(to humbly receive) and expresses gratitude to all who made the meal possible — farmers, cooks, and the living things that gave their life. It is said before every meal in Japan, alone or in a group. The paired phrase at the end of a meal is 「ごちそうさまでした」.
