Gesture & etiquette
Suggest splitting the bill before the check arrives — raising it mid-payment can be awkward. In Japan, one person often pays the full amount while others pay them back via bank transfer or payment apps like PayPay. Handling cash neatly in a small tray (rather than hand-to-hand) is the polite norm.
割り勘 (warikan, Dutch pay) is common among friends of equal standing, but in business settings the senior person or host often pays for everyone — attempting to pay your share in that context can seem inappropriate. Reading the social situation before suggesting warikan is important.
