Gesture & etiquette
Approach during a natural break — not when the person is clearly focused or on the phone. Speak quietly. If they look busy, offer: 「後ほど伺ってもよろしいでしょうか。」(Could I come back later?) Respecting concentration time is valued in Japanese workplaces.
「ご相談したい」(I'd like your advice) is more humble than 「聞きたい」(I want to ask) — this humble register is appropriate when approaching superiors. The trailing 「〜まして」signals you're about to explain more, naturally making the listener curious and receptive.
