Gesture & etiquette
Reach for your wallet as you say this — the gesture confirms your genuine intention to pay your share. In group settings, cash payment is still very common in Japan even in the app-payment era.
Warikan (splitting the bill equally) is common among friends and younger colleagues in Japan. However, in formal or seniority-sensitive settings, the senior person often insists on paying — reading the situation before suggesting warikan is important.
