Gesture & etiquette
Reach toward the dish or serving bowl slightly as you say 「どうぞ」— the physical gesture reinforces the verbal invitation. Do not serve food directly onto a guest's plate without asking first unless they have already accepted.
A Japanese host offering seconds is a deeply ingrained act of hospitality — the offer itself is as important as whether the guest accepts. Using 「よかったら」softens the offer, and 「もう少しどうぞ」(please have a little more) urges gently without creating social pressure.
