Gesture & etiquette
If demonstrating the DO and DON'T, use visual exaggeration of the wrong action briefly before showing the correct alternative (resting chopsticks on the 箸置き, hashi-oki rest). Seeing both makes the rule memorable.
Both taboo actions mimic funeral rituals: standing chopsticks in rice (立て箸) is done at Buddhist death rites; passing food chopstick-to-chopstick (箸渡し) mirrors the passing of cremated bones. Committing either at a meal table creates deep discomfort for Japanese diners.
