Gesture & etiquette
Small head nod when asking, slight smile. When receiving the demonstration, watch attentively and try once. A small 'arigatou gozaimasu' bow afterward (15 degrees) acknowledges the lesson.
Japanese dining etiquette requires lifting small bowls (rice, miso soup) with the left hand while eating with chopsticks in the right — never leaving the bowl on the table while eating from it. Asking staff directly shows respectful curiosity, which is appreciated. Never point at food with chopsticks, never pass food chopstick-to-chopstick (a funeral ritual), and never stick chopsticks vertically into rice (also funerary).
