Look at the osechi tiers with visible appreciation — slow gaze across the dishes. When the host explains, lean in slightly. A small bow of thanks (15 degrees) before tasting. Never take a dish before the host has formally invited you to begin ('douzo').
Osechi-ryouri is the elaborate New Year's feast prepared in stacked lacquer boxes (jubako). Each dish symbolizes wishes for the year ahead — black beans for health, herring roe for fertility, etc. Showing prior knowledge ('I heard...') invites the host to share more, which honors their cultural knowledge. Great conversation starter at a New Year's gathering with a senior host.
