Gesture & etiquette
Hold the bottle with both hands when pouring. Tilt slightly forward. Watch the level — stop before overflowing or when the recipient signals 'sufficient' with a small hand wave. When receiving, lift your glass with both hands toward the pourer. A small 'arigatou' afterward.
In Japanese drinking culture (especially with colleagues), pouring drinks for others is a small but important social ritual. You pour for others, they pour for you — never pour your own first. Notice empty glasses around the table and offer. When pouring beer, tilt the glass and pour the beer down the side to control foam. When receiving, hold the glass with both hands as a sign of respect.
