Gesture & etiquette
Stand at a comfortable distance — not too close to invade space, not too far to seem aloof. Bow 30 degrees, hold for 2 seconds. Smile warmly. After the bow, gentle eye contact while waiting for response. Wear name tag visibly. If they extend a hand, return the gesture gently with both hands.
First impressions in eldercare set the tone for the entire relationship. 'Osewa o sasete itadakimasu' (with your permission, I'll be in your care) frames you as the recipient of their trust, not the imposer of service. Speak slightly more slowly than usual — first meetings involve cognitive load for the senior to absorb your name and presence. Repeat your name when prompted, with patience.
