Gesture & etiquette
Speak with warm, calm tone — leave-taking can feel like loss to vulnerable seniors. Small bow (20 degrees) when announcing. If introducing the substitute, gesture toward them with open palm, allow brief small talk so the senior can form initial trust before you depart.
Continuity of care matters emotionally to seniors who form attachments to their regular caregivers. Always introduce the substitute by name and brief reassurance. 'Oyasumi o itadakimasu' (humbly receive vacation) frames it as something granted, not asserted. If possible, introduce the substitute in person before the leave begins to ease transition anxiety.
