Gesture & etiquette
Lift glass with both hands toward the pourer — right hand on the side, left hand supporting underneath. Soft eye contact and small smile. As liquid fills, slight nod when it reaches a good level (signals 'sufficient'). After they finish, take a sip immediately, then set glass down with both hands.
When someone pours a drink for you in a Japanese drinking setting, lift your glass with both hands toward them as they pour — this gesture shows respect and acceptance. Say 'sumimasen' (sorry/thank you for the trouble) or 'arigatou gozaimasu' when they finish. Take at least one sip immediately after receiving, then set the glass down. To decline politely, place a hand lightly over the glass and say 'kekkou desu, arigatou.'
