日本独特の習慣だね。
にほんどくとくのしゅうかんだね。
Quite a unique custom to Japan.
Gesture & etiquette
Demonstrate by miming a chopstick-to-mouth motion with a light slurping sound. Casual tone. Smile — sharing this often surprises foreigners pleasantly. Note: slurping is NOT for pasta in Japan, just noodles.
Slurping noodles (蕎麦, ラーメン, うどん) is welcomed and even expected in Japan — it shows enjoyment, cools the noodles, and aerates the broth flavor. Slurping is fine for ALL noodles in Japan but NOT for pasta. Spaghetti at Italian restaurants in Japan is eaten quietly. The slurp shouldn't be theatrical — natural noise as you breathe in noodles is the right level.
