Gesture & etiquette
Bow (20°) at the doorway upon first meeting. Warm smile, gentle eye contact. Approach slowly. Do not extend hand for shake unless they offer first. Sit at eye level for the conversation rather than standing.
Caregiver transitions can be unsettling for seniors. Introduce yourself warmly, mention any details the previous caregiver shared (favorite tea, daily preferences) early to show continuity. Spend extra time on the first day. Bring a small gentle conversation starter (photo of a season, garden flowers) to break the ice without intruding.
