Gesture & etiquette
Demonstrate: pick up the bowl with both hands at chest level (right hand under, left hand on the side), then shift to one-hand grip. Tilt the bowl toward your mouth, sip the broth, then return to the table before using chopsticks. Never blow on hot soup loudly.
Unlike Western soup, miso soup is drunk directly from the lifted bowl. Pick up the bowl with both hands first, then move your right hand to hold it normally. Use chopsticks to eat the solid ingredients (tofu, wakame, vegetables). Slurping is acceptable. Spoons are unusual and may even mark you as a tourist in casual settings.
