Gesture & etiquette
Bow about 15-30 degrees at the genkan (entrance). If they walk you to the door, wait for them to be safely seated/standing before saying goodbye. Wave gently from the gate as you leave. Walk a few steps before turning—too quick a turn feels rushed.
Standard end-of-visit goodbye. 「伺います」 is humble form of 「来ます」 (I will come)—reverent towards their home. Always announce next visit date so they have something to anticipate. 「失礼いたします」 is the formal exit phrase. Wave from the gate; some seniors watch you leave from the window.
