Gesture & etiquette
Hold the package with both hands and offer it at chest height. Smile warmly. In an office, it is normal to leave omiyage on a shared desk or counter with a small note rather than distributing individually — this allows people to take what they like at their own pace.
Bringing back omiyage (local souvenirs) for colleagues and friends after any trip is a firmly embedded social obligation in Japan — it is expected, not optional. Food items are most common. Not bringing omiyage when you have clearly been away on a trip can feel inconsiderate.
