Gesture & etiquette

Bow deeply (30+ degrees) when presenting this greeting in person. If presenting a goshugi envelope, hold it with both hands at chest height. Do not put it in a plastic bag — carry it in a furoshiki or carry pouch.

Wedding gift money (goshugi) in Japan is given in odd amounts (30,000–100,000 yen depending on relationship) in a special noshiukuro envelope. Never give amounts containing '4' or '9'. The envelope must be pristine — wrinkled bills are considered disrespectful.
