Gesture & etiquette
Bow slightly as you receive the bowl; cradle it on your palm; turn clockwise 2–3 times before the first sip; sip quietly and completely; the final small slurp is not only acceptable but signals you enjoyed it to the last drop.
Said before drinking tea prepared by the host in a tea ceremony (茶道). As a guest, receive the bowl with both hands, turn it 2–3 times clockwise (to avoid drinking from the 'front'), sip in 2–3 quiet sips, wipe the rim gently, turn the bowl back, and set it down with a bow. Even at casual gatherings, this ritual shows deep respect.
