You

書道では、墨を丁寧にすって、一筆ずつ気持ちを込めるんですよ。

しょどうでは、すみをていねいにすって、いっぴつずつきもちをこめるんですよ。

In calligraphy, you grind the ink carefully and pour your feeling into each individual stroke.

Amazing! I'd love to try it.

Gesture & etiquette

If demonstrating calligraphy, hold the brush vertically with a relaxed grip — not clenched. Breathe steadily before each stroke. Watching a skilled calligrapher work in silence is itself considered a valuable cultural experience.

書道 (shodo — Japanese calligraphy) is considered both an art form and a meditative practice. The act of grinding ink (磨る) on the inkstone with water is itself a calming ritual that prepares the mind for focused creation. Each stroke must be completed in one confident movement — hesitation or correction marks the paper permanently.
