Settle in comfortably rather than hovering or standing — this signals you have time to listen. Keep an engaged, warm expression and nod as they share. Bring up a photo if they have one nearby: 「この写真のお方ですか?」(Is this the person in the photo?).
Family is one of the most reliable and emotionally rich conversation anchors for seniors. 「聞かせていただけますか?」(may I hear about...) positions you as an interested listener, not an interrogator. Follow up with: 「どんなお子さんでしたか?」(What were they like as children?) to invite storytelling.
