福岡の田舎なんですよ。山と川がきれいでね、今でも時々夢に見ます。
ふくおかのいなかなんですよ。やまとかわがきれいでね、いまでもときどきゆめにみます。
I'm from a rural area in Fukuoka. The mountains and rivers were beautiful — I still dream about it sometimes.
Gesture & etiquette
Sit in a relaxed position and allow plenty of time; if they close their eyes while remembering, don't interrupt — that's a good sign; follow up with 'どのくらいの町でしたか?' (what size town was it?) to go deeper.
Asking about a person's hometown triggers long-term memory in elderly people — regional identity is very strong in Japan (Osaka vs Tokyo personalities, rural vs urban differences); showing genuine interest and asking for details honors their roots and regional pride.
