そうねえ…あの頃は大変だったけど、懐かしくもあるわね。
そうねえ…あのころはたいへんだったけど、なつかしくもあるわね。
Well... those times were so hard, but they do bring back memories.
Gesture & etiquette
Sit at eye level, lean slightly forward to show attentiveness, and maintain gentle eye contact with slow nods. Do not rush or interrupt — allow long pauses without filling them. Have tissues discreetly nearby. If the person becomes emotional, say 「ゆっくりで大丈夫ですよ」and gently touch their hand if appropriate.
The cushion 「もし差し支えなければ」is essential — wartime experiences can be deeply emotional or traumatic. Never press if the person deflects or becomes quiet. Being a patient, respectful listener is itself a profound act of care. Let the senior set the pace and depth of the conversation entirely.
