Gesture & etiquette
Sit across from them at a small table. Bring out the board and pieces, set up carefully (or let them set up — many seniors enjoy this). Take time over moves. Smile during the game, even if losing. Compliment good moves ('お見事です').
囲碁 (go) and 将棋 (shogi) are lifelong Japanese hobbies, with active senior clubs nationwide. Even if you don't play well, offering company at the board is meaningful — many seniors lose game partners. 'お手柔らかに' (please go easy) is a humble pre-game phrase. If they're skilled, ask them to teach you a move — turns the game into mentorship.
