Girls wore sailor uniforms, boys wore gakuran. Black was standard.
Gesture & etiquette
If they touch their collar or chest while reminiscing, they may be remembering the texture. Smile knowingly. Ask follow-ups: 「ボタンは何個でしたか?」 (gakuran usually had 5 brass buttons, given to a love interest at graduation = '第二ボタンの伝説').
School uniform memories are vivid. Pre-1970s: girls in セーラー服 (sailor uniform, navy with white scarf-tie), boys in 学ラン (gakuran—black stand-collar military-style jacket with brass buttons). Uniforms symbolized identity and discipline. Often hand-me-downs from siblings. The first day in a new uniform was a major life moment.
