Gesture & etiquette

Bow at about 30 degrees at the genkan threshold. Remove shoes before stepping up onto the raised floor, and place them neatly pointing outward toward the door. Do not leave shoes in a messy pile or pointing inward.

Said when entering someone's home or office. The genkan (entryway) is a sacred threshold in Japanese homes — always remove shoes before stepping up into the living area, and turn them to face the door as a sign of courtesy.
