Gesture & etiquette

Point toward the shower/rinsing area calmly and with a neutral, helpful expression. At onsen, conversations are minimal — quiet enjoyment is the norm. Do not splash or make loud noises in the bathing area.

At onsen (hot springs) and public baths, rinsing your body before entering the shared tub is mandatory hygiene etiquette. Entering without rinsing is considered very rude and unhygienic. Tattoos are also prohibited at most traditional onsen — check the rules beforehand.
