Gesture & etiquette

Approach the temizuya calmly. Use your right hand to scoop water with the ladle. Maintain a quiet, reverent demeanor — speak softly and avoid laughter or casual conversation during the purification ritual.

The temizuya (hand-purification fountain) is the ritual first step at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. The correct order: ladle water over left hand, then right hand, then cup water in left hand to rinse your mouth, then tilt the ladle to let water run down the handle.
