Gesture & etiquette

Present the package with a friendly smile and a slight bow. Distribute to everyone in the group simultaneously — give to the most senior person first in workplace settings. If individually wrapped, handing each piece personally is more thoughtful than leaving it out.

Bringing omiyage (food souvenirs) for colleagues and friends after travel is a strong social obligation in Japan — returning without gifts can seem inconsiderate. Regional specialty sweets and snacks are the most common choices. Always distribute to everyone present to avoid creating social awkwardness.
