Gesture & etiquette
Accept the gift with both hands; bow with a warm smile; place it beside you rather than setting it immediately aside — handling it carelessly signals indifference; if in a meeting or formal setting, open it after the giver has left unless prompted.
Expressing delight about the gift immediately without opening it is perfectly natural in Japan. If you wish to open it, ask first: '早速開けてもよろしいですか?' (May I open it now?). This simple request is warmly appreciated by the giver — it shows you're not taking the gesture for granted.
