いいですよ。ここに掛けて、体を流してから入るんです。

いいですよ。ここにかけて、からだをながしてからはいるんです。

Sure. You sit here, rinse your body first, then get in the bath.

Gesture & etiquette

Approach the person with a small, apologetic bow before speaking. Keep your voice low and respectful — sento are quiet, relaxed environments. Maintain a short physical distance. After receiving instructions, bow and say 'arigatou gozaimasu' before returning to your washing station. Follow the example of others around you.

Asking for guidance at a sento (public bathhouse) is perfectly acceptable and locals are generally welcoming to curious first-timers. Always wash your body thoroughly at the 'araiba' (washing stations) before entering the communal bath — entering without washing is considered a serious breach of etiquette.
