Gesture & etiquette

Present the gift with both hands, held at about waist to chest height, with a bow of around 20-30 degrees. The gift should be properly wrapped — unwrapped gifts are considered careless. If visiting someone's home, present the gift after you are welcomed inside and seated, not immediately at the doorway.

Ochugen (mid-year gift season, July) and oseibo (year-end gift season, December) are uniquely Japanese gift-giving occasions for expressing gratitude to those who have helped you. Food items, sweets, and regional specialties are most appropriate. Always present gifts with both hands and a slight bow, wrapped formally in a furoshiki or store wrapping.
