Gesture & etiquette
Bow before touching the tea bowl. Lift it with both hands — left palm supporting the bottom, right hand steadying the side. Rotate the bowl two quarter-turns clockwise, drink in three to four sips, then wipe the rim with your right thumb and index finger before returning it.
茶道 (sadou/chadou) is a practice of mindfulness and respect. Turn the bowl clockwise twice (two quarter-turns) before drinking — this rotates the decorated front away from your lips out of respect for the host's craftsmanship. After drinking, wipe the rim gently and rotate it back before returning the bowl.
