Gesture & etiquette
Join the circle and imitate the basic arm and step movements of the person in front of you. Smile and move with the rhythm — perfection is not expected. The circle typically forms around a central 太鼓 (taiko drum) tower, and everyone dances in the same direction.
盆踊り (Bon dance) is a community outdoor dance held during Obon festivals. Anyone can join regardless of skill — the welcoming, communal spirit is the point. Dance circles move counterclockwise; the steps vary by region. Wearing a yukata (summer kimono) enhances the experience but is not required.
