Gesture & etiquette
Hold the flower scissors (花鋏, hana-basami) correctly from the start — the instructor will notice. Observe their placement decisions carefully before making your own. Work slowly and deliberately — the meditative quality of ikebana is as important as the final result.
生け花 (ikebana) emphasizes minimalism, asymmetry, and the use of empty space (間, ma) as an intentional element. Unlike Western flower arranging, ikebana represents nature's movement and seasons. Saying 「よろしくお願いします」before the lesson and 「ありがとうございました」clearly at the end are expected courtesies.
