Gesture & etiquette
Receive the gift with both hands and bow at 30 degrees. In formal Japanese culture, gifts are not opened in front of the giver — wait until the visitor has left before opening, to avoid any appearance of evaluating the gift's value.
「お心遣い」(kind consideration) is the elegant way to receive a gift — it acknowledges not just the object but the thought and care behind it. Used for お中元 (summer gifts), お歳暮 (year-end gifts), and any formal gift occasion.
