Demonstrate a simple arm movement from the dance as you invite them — showing rather than just describing removes the fear of the unknown. Join in beside them rather than watching, which is far more encouraging.
Bon Odori (盆踊り) is a communal folk dance performed during the Obon festival in August. Foreigners who join are warmly welcomed — the dance is specifically designed to be learnable on the spot. Reassuring someone that movements are slow removes the hesitation barrier.
