三味線 (shamisen) — three-stringed lute, played with a 撥 (bachi plectrum). Genres: 長唄 (long-song, kabuki accompaniment), 義太夫 (gidayu, bunraku puppet accompaniment), 民謡 (folk songs), 津軽三味線 (Tsugaru, virtuosic solo). Other 邦楽 instruments: 琴 (koto 13-string zither), 尺八 (shakuhachi bamboo flute), 笙 (sho mouth organ in gagaku).
