Gesture & etiquette
Casual sharing tone. If listening to a piece together, sit quietly — never talk during sustained notes. Long pauses in shakuhachi music are part of the art (間 ma); honor them silently.
尺八 (shakuhachi) — five-hole vertical bamboo flute, traditionally associated with 普化宗 Buddhist monk-musicians (komusou) of the Edo period. Names derive from 一尺八寸 (1 shaku 8 sun ≈ 54cm). Plays in 本曲 (honkyoku, traditional solo pieces) and 民謡 (folk accompaniment). Modern composers use it in contemporary pieces too. Mastery takes decades — even a single sustained note is an art.
