Gesture & etiquette
If demonstrating any flow, hold an imaginary stem vertically with one hand, snip with the other—the rhythm of cut, place, step back, observe is the same across schools. Recommend the listener visit a Sogetsu workshop for accessibility (most welcoming to beginners).
Major ikebana schools: 池坊 (Ikenobo, 600+ years, oldest, traditional rikka style with religious roots), 小原流 (Ohara, 1895, introduced moribana flat-arrangement for Western flowers), 草月流 (Sogetsu, 1927, modern free-form, 'anyone, anywhere, with anything'). Each has its own headmaster (家元) and certification path. The flower itself, not the vase, is the center of attention.
