Excuse me, is it okay to put this towel in the bathwater? Or is it customary to put it on my head while bathing?
Romaji: Sumimasen, kono taoru wa yubune no naka ni iretemo daijōbu desu ka? Sore tomo, atama no ue ni nosete hairu no ga futsū desu ka? / Reply Romaji: Taoru wa yubune no naka ni irezu, atama no ue ka, yokusō no fuchi ni oite go-riyō kudasai.

タオルは湯船の中には入れず、頭の上か、浴槽の縁に置いてご利用ください。
タオルはゆぶねのなかにはいれず、あたまのうえか、よくそうのふちに置いてごりようください。
Please do not put the towel in the bathwater. Use it by placing it on your head or on the edge of the bathtub.
Gesture & etiquette
Hold up the small towel while asking, motioning towards the bath.
Never put your towel or hair into the bathwater in public onsen/sento. Wash thoroughly before entering.
