Gesture & etiquette
Join in clapping or swaying to festival music when it plays. When buying from food stalls, hold money with two hands when handing it over. Joining bon odori dancing (even badly) is always celebrated, not judged.
Summer festivals (matsuri) are community events centered on portable shrines (mikoshi), food stalls (yatai), and bon odori dancing. Wearing a yukata is warmly welcomed for foreigners — it is seen as cultural appreciation, not appropriation. Ask a local to help you dress correctly if possible.
