Gesture & etiquette
Casual, excited tone — hanami is festive and joyful. It's normal to bring a picnic mat (leisure sheet), snacks, and drinks. Cleaning up your space completely before leaving is essential — littering at hanami is strongly frowned upon.
Hanami (flower viewing) is one of Japan's most beloved spring traditions, typically in late March to early April. It involves gathering under blooming sakura trees with food and drinks. Securing a spot early in crowded parks is a social norm — often done hours in advance.
